Pop-up Exhibition & Book Launch: Filipino American Artist Directory
The exhibition will feature the work of nine artists: Crystal Z Campbell (Tulsa, OK), Ben Iluzada (Philadelphia, PA), Risa Recio (Chicago, IL), Yumi Janairo Roth (Boulder, CO), Benedict Scheuer (Columbus, OH), Gloria Shows (Columbus, OH), Jeffrey Augustine Songco (Grand Rapids, MI), Mishel Valenton (Centreville, VA), and Mikey Yates (Boulder, CO). Organized by Janna Añonuevo Langholz. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Filipino American Artist Directory is an independent initiative by St. Louis-based artist Janna Añonuevo Langholz to connect and make visible the broad community of visual artists of Filipino heritage living and working in the United States.
The project is based at the former site of the 1904 World’s Fair, which was significant for the 40-acre exhibit of 1,200 indigenous Filipinos in the present day Wydown-Skinker neighborhood. The directory confronts the history between the Philippines and the United States by highlighting Filipino American visual artists actively exhibiting their work and telling their own stories, as opposed to the passive tense of “being exhibited.”
This year’s publication features 92 Filipino American artists, with original commissioned cover artwork by San Francisco-based artist Lordy Rodriguez. The artists listed in the directory represent 20 states and 41 cities.
